Hi everyone, I am wanting to upgrade my computer but first I will give a little context. I built my computer about a few years ago, however lately it has been giving me trouble when playing some games such as Fallout 4 or Overwatch on high settings, often times the games will crash into a black screen and terminate themselves, or with Starcraft 2, it will constantly go to a black screen and then back to the game. I haven't had the time to maintain knowledge when it comes to building computers, specs, steps necessary, etc so I am feeling a little lost as what I need to upgrade to fix my issue. I assume it would have to be the processor and/or the graphics card, or both, but I am not entirely sure. Any help would be appreciated, budget-wise is not an issue, although I'd prefer to invest in something that is necessary that will keep me good for a while rather than a luxury. However, I can also afford a little extra so even providing me an option for both would be okay. If there is any information I can provide please let me know. Today is cyber Monday, I would spend some time to do some research myself but since today I am very busy with university projects and I am not able too.

Thanks you for your time.

This is my current build, everything is the same aside I have a different mouse, keyboard, added a network card and thats it.

Ok, so looking here, you will probably want to upgrade your CPU. To future proof yourself, I would go with a i7-6700K ($299). You will need a Z170 motherboard (I prefer Gigabyte Gaming 3 edition). Also DD4 RAM is needed. RAM is RAM, but I prefer G Skillz. Some people prefer the Corsair brand. As for a GPU, the GTX 1070 is good buy. If you can upgrade to the 1080 (over $600), then go for it. Your PSU is decent, but awesome may need to be upgraded down the line.

This may run you a pretty penny, but it will get the job done and future proof yourself for a few years.

Hi Herc08! Thank you for your recommendation. I was also wondering, for RAM, I still think we are pretty far off from needing 2x8 (16GB), so should I still go for 2x4 (8GB) RAM for gaming? Or should I go for the 2x8 now? Thanks

As you said in your OP, you want to future proof down the line, 8GB is good for now, but games will probably require 10GB or 12GB in the future. So 16GB should be the cut off limit for you. Plus if you do anything like Photoshop or video editing, that will help. I know Adobe Premiere used 9GB once. Imagine if I only had eight.
