Coaxial cable to Ethernet with no Modem Access?

Hi guys,

So I just moved into my new apartment recently - the upper floor of a duplex. I quickly noticed that there are no Ethernet ports on the wall, only phone jacks. I would much prefer my own dedicated wired connection over our shared WiFi. I think the landlady recently had Charter Spectrum cable internet added (included in rent) which would explain this. Unfortunately, the modem and router are downstairs in the other tenants' area so I don't really have free access to them.

Upstairs in my area, I have only a single coax cable coming in through the floor, running into a cable receiver. The receiver does have an Ethernet port on the back, and I tried using an Ethernet cable both directly connecting to my laptop, and bridging through a spare router/switch I have with no luck - Windows classified it as an unknown network with no Internet access.

Would an adapter similar to this work? Would a powerline adapter be feasible in this situation? If someone could point me towards something that will allow me to get a wired Ethernet connection using what I currently have (while still retaining my cable TV access), that would be greatly appreciated. I've never had cable internet before so please excuse my ignorance in this and I'm probably missing a lot of critical details (at work running off memory). I will provide any additional details that I can if needed. Thank you!

Coaxial cable only runs to the modem/router and cant continue after that and you cant have 2 modems so only way so get wired is from the modem/router that has the coaxial connection which would have Ethernet connection on it so your best bet is probably trying power line Ethernet although in some instances it might not work.

Powerline is likely your most cost effective. Buy the newest 600/1200m unit they work much better than the older models. You also can likely use the coax cable with devices called MoCA. This tends to be more expensive because there are fewer equipment vendors. There can also be issues with some whole home dvr systesm that conflict. I would try powerline before MoCA.

Another question for him would be how the electricity is handled in the apartment if it goes throughout whole building and if someone already has power line it would probably not be good.

Also, each apartment might be on it's on electrical circuit. If so, I don't think it would work. If I'm wrong please let me know.

Yea there's a lot of questions i think his best bet is to just run the Ethernet cable.

Thank you guys for all your input. To answer your questions, I am in a duplex house, with just my downstairs neighbors (1 unit) and I. I DO pay my own electricity, so I'm probably on my own circuit/meter. Theoretically if it works, I think my neighbors would be accommodating enough to let me install a powerline adapter in their unit. It's a very old house with plaster walls so I'm not sure how much drilling I could do; the landlady already doesn't want me to hang anything large on the walls. I'll have to talk to her about maybe drilling a small hole and moving the modem/router into our shared entryway on the other side of the wall. Also I'll fix the title lol.
