I'm having problems with my HDD. Recently, I bought new computer : new mobo, GPU, CPU, PSU.
However, I kept my HDD and external HD that I used before as a backup in this new computer.

So since I needed to buy another product of Windows 8 to activate it, I made sure I backed up all my files on my external hard drive.

I activated the new Windows 8 and nothing is installed from my HDD, HOWEVER I still only have about 140 GB open space in my HDD (which is what it was before I activated the new Windows). I thought the new Windows would just wipe my HDD but it still shows it wasn't.

Even though it wasn't wiped, the files are not all there. It's just kind of confusing to me.

What should I do for the fastest and most efficient process to transfer all my files from my external back to my HDD? Keep in mind, even though it says only 140GB is left open in my HDD, the files are not all there anyways.

I'm thinking of just wiping everything on the HDD and then transferring them back from my external.

Any help is appreciated :) )

As suspected: Your Windows.old is sucking up most of that space. 323.3GB, to be exact.
That is most of your previous OS install, used if you wanted to go back to what was there originally. (Not recommended)

2 options:
Disk Cleanup, and delete that Windows.old
or
Do a clean install again.
This time, when it asks 'where', select and delete ALL existing partitions on that drive.
Do...

Try the Disk Cleanup first.
