Hi all,

PC specs in my sig!

I had 2x4GB sticks running dual channel for 4 years, no problem, and decided to add another 2x2GB sticks. Same brand, same model and same speed. The only difference is their size and age.

My old 2x4GB sticks are in dual channel but I cant get the 2x2GB sticks to dual channel. I have been using them like this for a few days and memtested and its been fine so I think it's not a voltage problem. The only thing I can see being a problem is the size difference (8 and 4).

Is there a way to get the dual channel working? or is there a reason its not working that I have overlooked?

I used CPUID to get the channel information.

Any help appreciated, cheers!

Solution
Look at the memory tab, upper right, it will tell you single or Dual. SPD tab is nothing more than the info off each single stick ;) So, yes you are in Dual ;)

The bios now says the DRAM at 1.56v but no change.

I am looking at the correct thing in CPUID? On the SPD page, Ranks. My 2x4gb are "dual" and 2x2 are "single". That is dual and single channel right? because the Memory page says "Dual" in the "channel #" box.

Doh! I saw single and dual on the SPD page and took them for channels. It states dual on the Memory tab so everything's good.

Thanks for your help!

p.s. For all of the horror stories you hear about mixing ram is there any truth to it? Because I was expecting BSODS and tweaking the voltages of the ram, mc and nb.

Oh God yes, we see so many repetitive threads about mixing DRAM, what DRAM can I use, your question on CPU-Z, etc. I wrote a couple of articles for TomsHardware - FAQs and Fiction about DRAM - can get links to both here:

I usually use or play with 20 or more sets a month in my business and on my rigs and run into it all the time. Take a look at items 2 and 6 in the Myths article for a little more info ;)
