Can I use a Sata II MOBO+cable with an SSD that has a Sata III interface?

Hello, I'm trying to upgrade an old computer for a family member this Christmas but found that there are a limited number of options for Sata II SSDs.

Apart from lost potential speed, can I hook-up a Sata III SSD to a Sata II connector?

Yes you can, but it will be bottlenecked.
