I currently have an i3 4170 and I am planning to upgrade it to i3 6100 which would lead me to buy a new motherboard bcuz it requires a different socket. My question is do I have to reformat if ever I upgrade it? Or is there any other way not to reformat it without encountering any problems? Thanks!

Do this before you change the board

run cmd as administrator and run the following:

sysprep /genaralize /shutdown

what this does is put your system into a state where it will detect all your hardware again then shutdown.

once switched off, change the board, power it back on and windows will configure itself again, you will need to setup a temporary user account, but this can be deleted once logged back in, and you will have to reactivate your copy of windows because you have changed a key component. But you will have all your files, settings and user accounts will still be available

generally it is a good idea to reinstall your OS when upgrading your motherboard however as bobmanuk pointed out you can get your machine to re-initialize your hardware detection. While not my first choice it will work as he suggested though some errors may or may not crop up. It's worth a try. Worst case scenario you have to reinstall your OS. Just be sure to back everything up first.

Well what bob suggested is most likely your best bet. I hope you still have the product key because It may ask for it again when you re-activated windows. What version of windows are you running?

It will ask for your windows key again, you can use some software to find the key before you start the whole process, speccy i think tells you what your key is, as well as keyfinder by magical jelly bean. but having the key is half the battle, it still might not activate.

@Atomic - theres another foamy avatar i would like to use but i dont think it would be allowed on the forums lol
