Not sure of the best way to upgrade my ram. I have 4gbx2 dual channel with 2 more slots free. Not sure if what I do makes a big difference in deciding this. I mainly run games with overlays, mods & streaming. I will typically have afterburner and its related processes, steam or origin, sweetfx, overwolf, xsplit, mods depending on game and browser tabs open at once.

Should I buy a single 4gb stick or a dual channel 4gbx2? 4gb more will be enough. I heard about single sticks making things worse. Does this matter since I already have a dual channel set? Do 2 different sets of 4gbx2 dual channel work the same as a 8x2?

I'm using ddr3 1600 and an i5 4460. I don't want to spend a lot because I will probably upgrade to ddr4, skylake or newer and mobo in 12-18 months.

You want to go with 2 chips. What happens when you add only 1 chip for a total of 3 is it can force the computer to run the RAM in single channel mode. Some boards support dual channel even with 3 chips but if you don't know if yours does then definitely get the 2x4GB kit.

I didn't know quad channel was an option for what I have just by getting more of the same ram. I thought it was only in newer ram and had be 4 sticks set up for it..

Either way looks like I will just purchase a 2x4gb because I doubt I can find this oem ram.

Also sounds like getting 2x8gb and toss my 2x4 could be the best thing if the price is right

A 2x4GB kit will run you $50 to $60 (at least in USA) and a 2x8GB kit will run you $90 to $100.
It's up to you whether you want to spend the extra money but to me you can add the 2x4GB and put the savings towards something else.
Mixing different kits can sometimes cause issues so you should try to get one that matches your original set as closely as possible if you go with the 2x4GB kit, as others have suggested.
