Hello,

I've upgraded my Asus CM5570, and I think I got a video card that my CPU can't handle. The PC freezes suddenly by browsing the web and playing youtube videos. Other times the screens won't display anything when its powered on. I want it to be able to perform. I just want it to be a work computer, and play occasional games like tetris, but I can't even do that.

I know that is an older PC, and so I'm torn by trying to solve the issue by upgrading the memory ram to 8gb, tweaking the bios, getting a lower end card, overclocking... or just walking away from this PC. Can you please help me?

Here are my PC specs:

Bios Properties: (Stock I believe) Version 0301, system date 08-11-09, video date 12-01-08
CPU: Dual Core Intel E8600, 3333 Mhz (10 x 333)
Video Adapter: Intel G43/G45 chipset - integrated graphics
GPU: Radeon HD 7770
Ram: 2x2 = 4 gb
OS: Windows 7 64 bit, service pack 1
PSU: 650 w

Try this...
Temporarily uninstall Avast. Use MSE if you don't want to go unprotected https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14210/security-essentials-download
Don't run more than one virus pgm at a time, tho.
I've had Avast myself and had issues with it. After removing it, I have had no more problems. I think it has problems with some machines.

Might also try running memtest on each stick of RAM individually in case you have a bad stick.

There could be hardware or software reasons for your issues. Did the HD 7770 come supplied with the PC or did you add it? If the latter, what is the size of your PSU?

To eliminate most software conflicts, I'd recommend first updating your virus pgm. and running a FULL scan. Then run Malwarebytes to eliminate poorly written malware, ad-ware, and other bloat-ware code that my be the issue. Follow that with a run of CCleaner. Do the Clean and Registry portions both.

Thank you, clutchc.

The HD 7770 was added by me. Also the PSU, CPU, and memory cards are not stock - I added them all. The PSU is an aftermarket 650w max.

I installed a fresh copy of Windows 3 times, thinking that would eliminate registry issues. This time around, I updated and scanned the PC for viruses using Avast free edition. I also ran a couple of cycles of Malwarebytes, and then proceeded to clean the PC with CCleaner. That didn't work.

I tried to do all of that again last night, but I couldn't because the PC came one, but not the monitors. I did a hard power off, unplugged it, and tried to bring it back up 3 times with no luck.

This is why I think it might be a bios issue.

Thank you clutchc. In addition to following your recommendations. I removed the Video card, and the PSU, and the PC is been working strong for 4 days now. The Video card and its drivers was the culprit of this issue. I will look to get another Video card in the future, one that's compatible with my system, and it doesn't required a bigger PSU. Windows 7 is giving me a 3.5 for 3D graphics performance, and I'd like to upgrade without spending too much, or having to do extensive tweaking to the system. Any advice to upgrade to a better card will be appreciated.
