Looking to upgrade to SLI

-GTX 970 x2 (already using 1 // looking to purchase another)
-z77 chipset motherboard (SLI compatible // already using)
-750 watt PSU (looking to purchase)
-8gb RAM (already using
-i7 3770k (already using)
-1tb hard drive (already using)
-water cooling (already using)

preferably looking for cheaper / reliable components if not compatible.

What monitor are you using? SLI is decent but there can be issues such as heat, driver issues (can take awhile for SLI profiles) and micro-stuttering. As long you get (1) the second 970 for a good price and (2) the games you play won't exceed the 3.5 vram then the performance improvement would be decent being close to a GTX 980ti. Although your best bet is to sell your card and buy the best single GPU you can afford.

And yes I do use SLI but TBH I planned to get two cards from the start as the single GTX 780 6gb didn't have the speed required to use the 6gb of vram efficiently for gaming.

Planning to get a 144zh monitor upgraiding from a 60hz - prefarably hoping to run games like the witcher 3 or assassins creed at the high to ultra settings smoothly

Yeah im thinking of getting 1070 now due to the VRAM consumption of high demanding games like witcher
