I have a WD "My Passport" which used to work on my Lenovo laptop as I use it to backup my doctoral work. It still works when I plug it into another PC. This laptop came with Windows 8 but was quickly updated to Windows 10 and now will not work. I have tried all other USB ports, tried using "disk manager" to name the device (feedback given to others with this problem), but the option to "change letter drive and paths" is grayed out. I have also updated all of the drivers using the freeware "Driver Booster 4," the advice given at another website. Please help! The drive lights up, I can see it on the disk manager and device manager, but it does not show up in Windows Explorer.

MERGED QUESTION
Question from gingerprewitt : "WD external drive ("My Passport") not detected by Explorer in Windows 10 / Lenovo Laptop"

Hello,

I have tried lots of methods based on searching this issue. I have a Lenovo Laptop that is about two years old. It had Windows 8 on it, and at that point, my WD "My Passport Ultra" worked just fine to back up my doctoral work. It still works on other PCs, including my Surface. However, my Lenovo was upgraded to Windows 10 and now it will not read.

It is detected - I can see it on the taskbar in order to "safely eject" it
I updated the drivers using "Driver Booster 4" (the free version, as recommended by a user)
I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for the passport
I tried using all other USB ports with the exact same results.
I tried using "disk management" to name the path but "change drive letter and paths" is grayed out. When I use device manager, it states that all drivers are updated... Please help!

This is not an old laptop nor is it an old external device. Currently, when I plug it in, it lights up and appears as though it will read it, but then it does not show up in Windows Explorer.

I appreciate your time.

I have no problem, except I do not know how to post the screenshot. The picture link on the toolbar to this textbox wants a URL and I do not know how to generate that. If you let me know how to do that, I can follow steps pretty easily.

Thanks

Hi there gingerprewitt,

That is really unpleasant. :(

As for the screenshot, you can upload it to an image hosting website and post the link over here.
What are the options that you get when you right click on the drive while in Disk Management? If you can reformat it, then you can just attach it to another computer, back up all the data, attach it back to yours and reformat it. This way, the drive could get properly recognized.

I assume you've updated all the drivers right? Have you tried to uninstall the device in Device Manager -> disconnect it from the system -> reboot -> plug it back in?

Let us know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Good Evening,

Yes - I have tried uninstalling the device in Device Manager. There is not an option when I use Disk Management to reformat. "Delete Volume" and "help" are the only options that come up. What would happen if I selected "Delete Volume"?

Great idea on the screenshot - here is a link https://www.dropbox.com/s/puvjh7671q60bew/Screenshot%20of%20disk%20management.png?dl=0

Thanks for any help! :)
