Black screen after restart. Can only boot to safe mode. Trying to update to GTX 1080, but won't register in device manager.

So I got the new GTX 1080 and tried installing tonight. Before turning on my PC I removed my old GPU (AMD HD7950) and installed the new one. When the PC booted I tried downloading and installing the Nvidia driver for it. Would not install and stated "the driver does not support this version of windows" or something along those lines. Tried installing from the CD that came with it and got the same error after using the program on the CD. Figured I needed to update Windows itself since I hadn't done so in a few months. When I restarted after the update I only get a black screen after seeing my MOBO screen and the Window screen, no login as normal. I can boot into safe mode but cannot connect to the network and can't figure out how to fix. I tried putting in the original GPU but no luck. Still no GPU detection in device manager.

I'm running Windows 10 from an original Windows 7 install years ago. What can fix this for me?

i5 3570K
Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
EVGA 850 PSU
16 GB ram
Hyper 212 EVO cooler

Solution
Finally found a solution that worked for me. I had to force a Windows update to the latest version. The new GPU combined with a failed update through Windows preferred method is what caused my black screen and not recognizing the GPU. Including a link to the thread and fix for those who have the same issue.

"Apparently, I need to update Windows to version 1511 using this: http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/C/4/1C41BC6B-F...

Then supposedly i will be able to install the drivers, if this thread in the geforce forums is to be believed (https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/945984/geforce...)"
