What Makes A Graphics Card Perform Good?

I am simply curious and I don't want to sound very nooby. What makes a gpu perform very well,? Is it those gddr5 memory on them, maybe the more gddr5 memory equals better performance? Or is it the newer architecture of gpu's today. Please tell me all the important facts that I should know why a graphics card perform well. I hope you understand my question because I can't quite choose the correct words to explain what I mean.

At the heart it's more transistors and better driver optimization. GDDR5, HBM, and GDDR5x are great because they allow the gpu to pull textures faster as needed, but if you have a slow core GPU then there's only so much it can do. More memory does not equal better performance, more CUDA/Stream Cores depending on Nvidia/AMD makes it faster and the memory is just there to support them. By the way 1 Cuda core and 1 stream processor are not equal in performance. Smaller transistors due to a smaller manufacturing process means that you can fit more in the same space, which is why today's GPU's are much more powerful.

^ adding to this point as a slight clarification: More CUDA/Stream Cores when comparing like generation to like generation correlates to better performance. For example, CUDA core counts on the 780Ti and 980Ti are incredibly similar, yet we all know the 980Ti is better, as explained above.
