OK, I just acquired a home built computer from my sister in law. Her husband died about 4 years ago. He built this computer for gaming, and I'm trying to figure out what does what?
I am not naive to computers, but lets just say, my old computer is 10 years old...

I am not into gaming, but I'd like to use this computer for regular things, like email and watching videos etc.

Let me start out with the case. It's a Thermaltake Xaser 3. With a built in temperature display and fan controller. It has 7 fans inside it, not counting the power supply fan, CPU fan and the one attached to the video card.

It has an Asus motherboard, and a GeForce GTX 550 Ti video/graphics card installed..

I don't think he knew alot about computers, when he built this thing!
As some things don't work, or are not hooked up, or plugged in correctly.

I will start with the temperature display. The temperature sensor, was just laying inside the case.
I believe it's supposed to be attached to the CPU somehow. I just stuck it in the fins of the CPU copper heat-sink for now...

The "Thermaltake" light, on the front of the computer, is not connected to anything, and does not light up. The hard drive indicator does not light or flash, with the usage of the computer.

I could not connect it to my old LCD monitor, because it has a DVI connector.
I have since acquired the original monitor, but it looks like he used an adapter to connect it to the monitor, using the old VGA socket of the monitor.

I had to rob a old VGA video card, from an old computer, to get it to work.

I am interested in getting better resolution with the DVI connection. And have ordered a DVI-I cable, to see it this works...

When I tried it with the adapter, it said, no input, or something like that.
So I went back to using my VGA card, so I could use it.

It also has something called a "Sound Blaster" installed on the front panel. What is this?
It is a "THX" whatever that is?

I am just using it with a regular keyboard and mouse. But I also acquired a G15 gaming keyboard and mouse. That I haven't even tried... know what it does, or probably will never use...

Also the interior wiring looks like a rats nest. Hard to tell what goes where...

Any help with this computer would be greatly appreciated. As my old computer motherboard died after 10 years, and 3 hard drives.

Like I said, I'm not into gaming, but want to use this computer for my everyday stuff.
It also came with a surround sound speaker system, that would be nice, but I really don't need.

In fact, I got a lot more computer stuff with it, but have no idea what some of it's for.

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

Dave

No idea.

Thermaltake Xaser III manual Note chapter 3 on the connections to motherboard and front panel connectors. This should be a starting point for you to set it up correctly.

Speccy Download something like this so you can identify the motherboard. Use that information to find the motherboard manual on Asus' site. This may help you in setting it up as well.

Sound Blaster is associated with Creative sound cards. Motherboards have their own audio outputs, but this sounds like a sound card device of some sort.

THX is a surround sound standard (or something like that). Often associated with films at cinemas/theatres and home cinema set ups for those inclined. Likelihood is, the Sound Blaster in the PC meets THX standards. (Would also be good with the surround sound speakers you mention.)

Thank You very much for all your idea and suggestions. I was able to find instructions for the mother board and chassis case. But it looks like I'm going to have to take it all apart, and start from scratch, in order to fix all the problems with this machine. The fellow who built it, "may he rest in peace", Did not follow the instructions correctly, or had no idea what he was doing... But I applaud him for trying his best!
I also have an even older machine, that he might of built himself, not sure.
Perhaps I can get that going again too, or just use it for spare parts...
I seem to remember him telling me, he thought it has a virus, many years ago, when he was still alive.
I will never know...
Another project, for another time.

Thanks again! You have given me enough information, to research, and eventually I figure it out. I don't give up easily!
I am an old computer geek. I had some of the first old computers, before the internet even existed, as it does today...
The advances they have made, in the last few years are amazing!

I don't need the latest gadgets, I just get by with what I can afford, or get for free...

Sincerely,
