Hi all,

Recently while using playstv to record gameplay footage my PC shuts itself off after about 3-5 mins. I have looked at temps and CPu is about 40 but the graphics hit 97 then shut down.

system specs are - Fx-6300, R9 280x and it uses an alphacool water system.

My assumption being a novice is that the machine is shutting down when it gets too hot.

just after some advice on how to check everything and also how to check water pump and for blockages etc

I bought the system second hand about 12 months ago (to see if PC gaming was for me!

Solution
Assume you have both CPU and GPU water cooled. If not say so.

Feel the heatsink on the GPU while gaming when the GPU hits about 50-60C (don't wait until 90C - you'll burn yourself). See if the heatsink on the GPU is HOT. If so the water loop is not working. If the heatsink is cool then the thermal connection between the coldplate and the GPU is not right, you need to remove heatsink and reapply thermal paste after cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and coffee filters.

Good Luck. Someone else please jump in if there is an easier way to tell.

Thanks tsnor,

yes both are water cooled. The GPU seems to sit at about 40 - 45 when idling. I will have a little look at the heat sink tonight - although being a novice not sure how to get to this as the card is encased by the water cooling. or am i being dull?

Ok so i stripped out the whole water cooling system - (nightmare) so i could get to the hestsink on the GPU. Imagine my surprise when i saw a piece of plastic saying "WARNING" please remove before installing.
The guy who built the machine was clearly in a rush to get it in there. anyway removed ti - cleaned and reinstalled thermal paste on gpu and cpu - refitted the water cooling with new piping. Now GPU idles at 35 ish and under the same load that caused it to crash it is 50-55. So a million times better!!
