BIOS Causing Blackout?

My windows 7 toshiba computer shuts down (blacks out instantly) pretty randomly, but most often at boot up. The last time this occurred at boot up, the computer first tried a recovery (which took a half an hour), and when that failed it tried a restore, and when that failed it did a complete factory install. The re-install worked fine until boot up the next morning, when it blacked out again. Luckily, the second boot up worked, and even though it works most of the time, I expect these blackouts to continue, eventually leading to another factory install, wiping out all my files. The other symptom I have is a red "X" over the battery icon with the message "battery not connected" but this usually lasts only a couple seconds and goes away (maybe when I click on the icon?). My question is do you think the BIOS is at fault and should I update it?
