Hi

Recently I've been experiencing problems with my PC. I custom built it myself, the specs will be given below, I built it about 3-4 months ago maybe shorter. At first everything run on ultra, all was really good, but recently I've experienced frame drops and lags which I never had, even on my old PC which was bad! Straight away. I know for 100% it isn't anything other than a motherboard/cpu problem. I have been looking around and read a lot online, I found out that it possibly could be the Slow mode switch which is on the motherboard and tried to fix the problem using this however no difference, the CPU speed is constantly at 800mHz, even when changing the ratio to 40. I really don't know too much about PC's, and I'm stuck at what to do at this point and need instant help as it is bugging me and I honestly can't figure out how to solve this as there isn't too many solutions other than ones I have already tried online. That's why I'm hoping you could help me. I also read online that there is a option which I could turn the Thermal Throttling off or something like that however I haven't seen this option in the BIOS settings from what I have seen anyway. Hope you guys could help me and I can solve this problem as soon as possible with your help!

Thank you.

Have you tried to reset the BIOS to eliminate any changes or strange settings?

As for turning off thermal throttling NO do not do that (not that you can anyway), its there to keep you from melting down your CPU.

Have you checked your temperatures at all?

Like I mentioned I don't have the best PC knowledge however slowly learning more and more about it all! :) I tried to reset the BIOS however I'm unaware of how to, and tried to look it up but having issues doing so. The temperature of the CPU is at 26-28'C and doesn't really go higher at all.

I took the battery out for 10 minutes while unplugged and off, put it back in and it still said 0,8gHz.in BIOS. The temperatures are as follows CPU - 23'C and Motherboard 30'C

I logged in, I used the CPUID program, it loaded in and said the core speed is 3900-4100MHz, then after about half of a minute it went back to 802MHz for a few seconds, and it keeps repeating this over and over again. Goes up and down up and down.

It is going to move around under idle. You need something tom log when you are running a game to see if it stays up. You can use HW Monitor and it will record the max values. Or download MSI afterburner and use the system tracking in there.

It didn't move around when idle before though, it just did it again when it goes to over 4GHz and stayed around there for a minute and went down to 802 and staying there all the time. Launched GTA V and no changes, stays at that speed. I launched Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, it says the Thermal Throttling is at 100% ??

I even put a standard room fan next to the PC open, it's temp. went down to 19'C and the CPU Utiliz. is between 4-10% right now... :x

I've seen this issue before, first thing you want to do is update the BIOS

https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z170A-GAMING-M5.html#down-bios

Also check out page 41 in the manual, there is a "slow mode" switch physically on the motherboard for liquid nitrogen cooling this should be set to NORMAL not enabled (switch to the left is normal). You may need to switch it on and then off a couple times.

See if this helps

If this doesn't work I am thinking you are having a motherboard failure (probably that switch failed), and you need to contact MSI to get a replacement.

Okay, I installed a BIOS Update, didn't help or change anything. I don't think it can be a failure since so many people had this issue to and seemed to solve it, mentioning the switch it's on normal and I already tried this solution.

Just try flipping the switch back and forth, if it works that may tell you its the switch failing.

Users have fixed this issue either by using the switch (which in your case isn't set to the wrong spot), or in some cases disabling thermal throttling. If you are doing that you are bandaiding your system for a problem with the motherboard. it is a BAD idea because if your cooler fails or something like that you could burn up your processor.

I already tried and played with this switch like I mentioned. However with the thermal throttling for the time being I see it as the only option if it will even work seeing as it's stuck at 100% all the time.

So in the BIOS you can disable thermal throttling which will fix the problem.

You have to go to OC settings then CPU, then CPU features, and disable Intel Adaptive Thermal Monitor.

Like I said, do it at your own risk. IMO, your motherboard is defective and should be exchanged.
