My 4690k is bottlenecking my 980 ti in 144fps, will buying a 4790k help or should i go for skylake instead? :)

thx

Solution
Try to reset BIOS settings and update it to newest version, maybe that will help.
Also can you post us your full system specs.
With my Build when i set everything on low and res scale is 100% 1080p i get around 250 FPS most of the time.

Playing on lowest settings in overwatch with 50% resolution scale reaches about constant 150 fps but drops now and then. Which is annoying as f*ck cause it feels like stuttering. My cpu is always 100% used when in load. Cant reach it in battlefield 1 or titanfall even with lowest settings 50% res scale.

Have you already tried overclocking your cpu? The 4790k runs a bit faster out of the box and oc'd maybe 100-200mhz faster than an oc'd 4690k. If the gpu isn't being utilized completely it shouldn't make much difference if running low settings vs higher visual quality. May as well turn the visuals up a bit unless it's actually impacting fps.

I'm a bit surprised, techspot bench'd several cpu's in overwatch and they were reaching 180fps with a stock 4690k but paired with a gtx 1080 at ultra quality. They showed fps dropping to 123fps, where the i7's like the 4770k was only dropping to 175fps. They also show with an i7 6700k that clock speed has an impact.

Already checked that, just now reinstalled my computer to see that the problem still persisted.

I like to play ow with lowest settings as it feels more fluid. I don't know what to do. Everyone elses ow seems flawless and im here with stutterings & fps drops. Im just about to play on a competitive level too. Can't focus ingame with these things happening.

What kind of ram do you have? High speed ram does not improve framerates, but can help with higher minimum framerates, so overclocking or upgrading your ram might help.

Also, getting Skylake i7 over the 4790k would not make much difference in performance, stick with the current setup.

16GB 1600mhz, it seems like. In the beginning of games, it works flawless. But after like 2-3 min, it starts lagging. It has nothing to do with thermal things. Already checked.

I agree, if looking to upgrade to an i7 I'd stick with the 4th gen as well. The 4790k is close to the 6700k. My point about the i7's speeds in the techspot benchmarks was that core speed matters and fps will improve as clock rates go up. So if the 4690k is running at stock on a z series motherboard, overclocking it may improve things.

Yikes. Those are terrible frames for a high end setup. Clearly there's issues somewhere. Possibly the PSU is faulty. Maybe your CMOS is corrupt or you have incorrect values set.

If you don't know what you're doing consider taking it to a professional to have things tested.

I wouldn't exactly call them terrible or in need of a pc repair shop. Many have complained of fps drops since the patch released around halloween (1 month ago).

http://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20749755996

They've had ongoing problems on and off. Given the amount of complaints from users when googling 'overwatch fps drops' I'd say it's not an isolated incident. That's another thing that online benchmarks can't really account for, a game comes out and they bench it. Then if a major problem existed they may revisit and rebench the game after a significant patch. Otherwise games are fluid and patches can be frequent. Patch doesn't always equal improvement, they often cause just as many problems as they 'fix'. Nature of the beast.

Could it be that something is throttling? My cpu is always 100% used while gaming. Something about that? Ram? Have tried overclocking my cpu to 4.5, didnt help a bit.

I am desperate for a solution. Have been using this pc for about a year and the problem has been there ever since i got it.

Yep, the problem is that it happens with all games. Doesnt matter if i choose the lowest settings possible. Even with some configurationtweaks.

Sorry I disagree. He's on 50% render scale on the lowest settings. I've seen better frames from 8 year old GPUs

My opinion is that something is wrong with your setup. Whether it be hardware or software related; something is bogging things down.

Good luck OP

check my thread from yesterday
apparently this is getting common now

you need to balance the gpu load and embrace a lower constant framerate

once your cpu get's over 90% load, you're done
