Closed Back or Open Back headphones for gaming?

I have purchased the Sennheiser HD 598 Cs which are the closed back design toi the original open back HD 598 headphones. I noticed that there was a great deal on amazon for these so I decided to snatch them up for a Christmas gift. My son loves gaming and I am not sure if I made the correct choice of buying these? Please help! :??:

Is open back still an option to hear these footsteps, is the sound stage still good on closed back? (Because yes he told me that he likes "FPS" games)

It kinda varies in every different model of headphones. I haven't really heard a lot about the soundstage but from what I have heard they aren't too far off the soundstage of the HD598 Open Back ones. The HD598 Closed Backs are just slightly not as good.

Okay so, technically either is fine. But Open Back headphones provide a better soundstage for gaming. Say you are playing a game where hearing an enemy's footsteps is an advantage and an Open Back pair of headphones will provide a better soundstage to pinpoint where that enemy is better than a Closed Back pair, on most headphones. If he doesn't really play FPS games where you need to be able to hear an enemy's footsteps or where it would be an advantage, than I'd say the Closed Back is fine.
Hope I could help!

I don't think you made a bad choice at all! I was so close to buying myself a pair of them on Black Friday. The Sennheiser HD598 and HD598CS are a very popular pair of headphones too, from what I've seen. So I definitely don't think it would be so popular if it sucked!
I hope your son likes them!
