Generally no. A modem/router with more than 4 ports is obscenely expensive.
If you need more ethernet ports, a $25 switch will do the trick.

Nope. If you need more ports all you have to do is to add a SWITCH, inexpensive.

my friend told me that i will get way slower speeds because the switch is splitting up the signal even when the ports are not being used

Your friend is 100% incorrect.

A reasonable switch ($25) is 10/100/1000 on all ports, independently, and all the time.

My current house setup is:
Router->8 port switch->5 port switch->my main PC
Many other devices hang off both switches and the router.

If what your friend says were true...my main PC would be at a crawl.
It isn't.
