specs:
i7 6700k (not overclocked)
ASUS Rog Strix geforce gtx 1080
MSI z170-a motherboard
16GB G.Skillz Ripjaws DDR4 2400
Hyper 212 Evo cooler, 1 fan
Xtreme Gear 650W power supply

So today, my computer began to feel very warm. I check the temperature and sure enough it at 65 degrees celsius, and staying there. This is strange because I have not had this problem at all before today, and the average temp before was about 25 degrees and 45 degrees max when running a game. I just installed my 1080 about 3 days ago, but im not sure if this would affect it or not.

I checked the bios and I had smart fan control on, so i took it off to see if that would change anything. At first, it went back to the 25 degrees it should be at, but as soon as I launched Battlefield 1, it almost instantly skyrocketed to 50 degrees, then slowly up to 60. I have never seen it this high before. I ran BF1 yesterday with no problem. If I tab out of the game, after a few minutes it drops down to 30 degrees.

Next thing i tried was moving the cooler around slightly, just to see if maybe it was loose. It didn't seem that anything was wrong there. I know my power supply isn't good at all, but could this cause my CPU to heat up?

Also, the radiator itself is also hot, but the fan is spinning at 2k rpm. I had this problem a year ago. Back then i was running an old amd cpu and a liquid cooler. I have since replaced everything except for the power supply. Is this the most likely reason it is overheating or is there some other problem?

Is there anything I can test to see if it helps? It seems strange to just have it skyrocket randomly after I haven't changed much. Could i be damaging the CPU or any other parts?

Definitely nothing wrong with the CPU or cooler that I can tell. Another thing you said you moved the cooler around. Did you...

That is true, however, that doesnt answer why it randomly starts jumping up to 65 when just yesterday it was running at 40 and idling at 25.

I've never actually had a CPU that runs at 40C at 85%+ that's not on custom watercooling, not sure how you managed that. It could be the extra heat dumped in your case by the 1080, that will be marginally fixed by more case fans. I really wouldn't worry about this though.

I was thinking it could be the 1080 as well, however, why is it just today beginning to make it hotter? It was running normally yesterday. Also, my gpu is idling at 40 degrees, and about 63 while playing BF1. It would make sense if the GPU was causing the entire case to heat up, making the cpu heat up as well but it doesnt explain why it is just starting today.

65c max while gaming is a pretty good and comfortable temperature for it to be at. As to why it went from 40c to 65c. Probably just the extra heat that the 1080 creates (even though +15c is a decently big jump just from adding a GPU). Do you have a lot of case fans? If you have like only 1 or 2 I'd suggest getting some more and seeing if that helps. 40c max while gaming is actually pretty darn low especially on air with a game like BF1, perhaps whatever you were using to monitor your temperature for your CPU wasn't quite right. Either way it's perfectly fine and safe.

I have definitely noticed an increase in heat just from feeling the case, as for fans, i only have 1 fan other than the CPU. I should buy some more but i just never felt like i needed them seeing as it only got as high as 40 degrees. My case isn't very large either. The gpu reaches all the way across to my hard drive bays, so it is very possible that that slight air blockage could be heating up the entire case and motherboard. I guess i will invest in another 2 fans and have them draw the heat off the graphics card. I was just worried that there was something wrong with either the cooler or the cpu.

Definitely nothing wrong with the CPU or cooler that I can tell. Another thing you said you moved the cooler around. Did you unscrew it and move it around and screw it back down? If you did anything like that, you SHOULD definitely take the cooler off remove the thermal paste and put some new on. When you unscrew the heatsink you it wont have as much pressure as it usually has and will not provide as good contact thus making air bubble when it is screwed back down which can raise the temperatures.

Yeah that most likely is what happened because when I was installing the new gpu i had to remove the power from the motherboard, and i had to wiggle my hand between the cooler and the side of the case so its likely i wiggled it around and either loosened it or spread the thermal paste around. This in combination with the added heat from the gpu probably caused the increase temperature. I'll try taking off the heat sink tomorrow and adding new thermal paste.

Reapplying the TIM is probably a good idea, but you're honestly fine with where you're at. It's honestly a GOOD thing that you can feel the heat coming out of the case and that the 212 Evo is hot. That at least shows that the coolers on the CPU and GPU are both doing their jobs.
