In case you were wondering what CPU it was, it's the i5 4440. The motherboard for it had broken down months ago, and it's very close to a year now since it broke, and wasn't bothered to replaced the motherboard.

I preserved the CPU a couple of times. Is it possible for a CPU to "rot" overtime if it's not used for extended amounts of time? I am about to buy a motherboard for it, so it won't be for much longer before it starts working (I hope it still works) once again.

TL;DR - Can a CPU "rot" overtime if it's not used for months?

No, it'll work just fine. It's far more likely to damage a Cpu that's been working the entire time than to have it sit protected. Once again, as long as it was handled safely and not just thrown in a drawer to knock around with crap, it'll be fine.

Sorry to jump in, but yeah.

It's sort of like thinking like shoes, if you use them every day then they'll get worn down eventually over time, if you leave them and don't wear them, they'll be in great condition and wont wear down.
