I have a 4k samsung smart tv with no 3.5mm jack. I have harmon kardon soundstick wireless 2.1 speakers that I still wish to use and control with the tv remote. Unfortunately using them through bluetooth, optical and AV this is not posible but will buying a hdmi arc converter work? The tv has hdmi arc function but my speaker system doesn't so wondering if this will work at al.

Solution
The only audio output on a TV that would be controlled by the TV remote is a headphone out. Digital audio outputs (ARC or optical) are fixed volume. Neither a DAC or HDMI ARC audio extractor will provide a variable output.
You could use one of these

along with a DAC or extractor but it would work with its own remote not the TV remote.
Your TV could be modified to do what you want but it would void the warranty.

No I'm looking for a box that will plug in via hdmi and 3.5mm so I can control the sound via the tv. The problem with all the other connections noted above is I lose volume control and have to manually do it on the speakers. I've seen many of these hdmi conveyer boxes on amazon but no idea if they work. So I'm thinking hdmi arc to converter box and speakers 3.5mm into converter box.

I replaced my 10 year old Samsung TV today with a latest and greatest "smart" replacement. For the past year or so, I have been connecting headphones into the RCA outputs of my TV so as not to disturb my light sleeper of a partner. I purchased this new TV assuming I could do the same. Unfortunately, I was very frustrated to discover that the latest generation of TVs from Samsung don't have any analog outputs, 3.5mm or RCA. Long story short, very late in the day I remembered that I have an HDMI Audio Splitter Adapter I used to split out the audio signal from a DVD I connect to a projector with very bad speakers. Anyhow, I iplugged my FireStick (and it works with my Apple TV as well) into the input of the splitter and ran an HDMI cable to my TV. The splitter has a 3.5 output that I connect to a Trond BT-DUO wireless Transmitter which pairs with a BT-RX S receiver where I connect my headset. It's about a $75 kludge but it works!

Hi Redwoodk,

I have a similar problem to yours. upgraded my tv to latest samsung smart tv but it has not headphone jack. are you able to link me with what you got so i can get the correct thing. Also i want to listen to the TV directly on my wireless (not bluetooth) head set. SO im thinking input from TV and output to 3.5 mm jack. will this work? have you tried this?Awaiting your reply

There is an audio output on back of tv. Plug headphone jack in this and go to Sound Settings and change from TV speaker to Audio Output. Just figured it out and works fine with my earbuds.
