You can't really, even software that can read harddrive or BIOS uptime can't be trusted as one can easily manipulate these statistics. Obvious checks if it is used are signs of use such as dust and scratches, windows being already setup (new laptops always walk you through setup when booting into it for the first time). You can also try to use data recovery software on your harddrive, to see if there are old files on it that belonged to another person (this can sometimes happen if the harddrive wasn't properly formatted or cleaned up).
