Hdmi to old surround sound system

I have just bought a new tv and the only connections are hdmi plugs ...and I want to connect my Sony dav-S800 system. Any ideas?? Thank you

Make and model of the TV would help.
Your Sony has an optical digital audio input. This is the most common type of audio output on TVs. That gets the sound from the TV into the Sony. Just get a Toslink optical cable.
Sony has composite video output. If your TV doesn't have this kind of input you will need a converter to HDMI. Some TVs have a shared component composite video input. You have to select composite in the TV menu.
Since the picture quality of the Sony disc player will look lousy on a modern TV I would buy a simple blueray player which will connect to the TV directly with HDMI rather than a converter.

What device is sending the data, Game console, Bluray player, Like what do you have connected to the TV that you want to play on this Sony?

I know off the top of my head it's going to be a DAC. DAC is short for digital audio converter. Your just looking for a HDMI DAC with HDMI pass through with optical output. On Ebay they call them Extractor Converter Audio Splitter AD.

If your running this from a device with HDMI to the TV, does this device have toslink? You could just use a toslink to the Sony and not use the HDMI if you already thought of the sorry just checking all ways.

Hi thanks you for quick response!! Very great full! ! I don't have anything connecting to it it's basicallly connecting surround sound system which is a dvd player aswell to the new tv.... so i can watch and listen basic tv thru the Sony system.... I require a user friendly answer as not very clued up on this ...lol thanks

Okay so where do i begin.
HDMI = digital, = no analog (analog = what we use to hear) on the cable.
To get this from the HDMI (remember digital info zeros and ones, the same thing computers use ) needs to be converted to allow you to be able to hear it. (just the audio part, HDMI picture is still digital.
When you connect a HDMI to a TV, It sends that signal to paths on a PCB (printed circuit board).
More or less if the signal has audio that needs to be routed to speakers then it must be sent to a DAC (Digital Audio Converter) Then sent to the speakers for you to hear it.

So i take it your just wanting the audio from the TV to go to the audio unit and play the sound of what ever the TV is playing? If this is right read this.

What you would need then is a DAC with a input for HDMI, Most times called audio extractor. There are cheap units are very high costing units, but don't worry about that.

If i were you, I would be searching google for a HDMI audio extractor with HDMI pass through. Whats the model number on the TV?
