RX 480 pulling over 300Watts?

Hi there! Im a pretty avid PC user, but wattage is something I never really looked into. I recently bought an Rx480 through a black Friday deal and the min specs for the PSU was said to be 500W. Even though I know I should probably upgrade my stock Envy power supply, I want to be able to use it while I save up for a decent replacement. However once the card arrived the classic PSU safety shutdown occured (even during silent mode). The stock power supply in this computer has 3 rails ( I believe) but even with everything I am running I should be below 500w. Power supply calculator suggested a 450w. This PC is fairly new, about 5-6months old, so its not like the PSU is highly degraded. My real question is if the card might be pulling to much power. I snapped this picture of the GPU at max power pull and it seemed way higher than I would think is necessary. It pulled a max of 300W! Gpu-z log picture Here-> http://imgur.com/gallery/A4Tz4

I just wanted to ask if this is normal. I used a different 6pin+2 connector and its only shutdown once since then. Another PSU is in the mail as a quick fix until I can afford a nicer one. Any thoughts?

look at this screen shpt then ''gpu power '' may give you a better idea?

I assume that shows my card hit at max when it was at full load doing what ever I was doing was 276w in witch is right at the bios power limit of my card

Board power limit
Target: 250.0 W
Limit: 275.0 W
Adj. Range: -40%, +10%

now don't forget pci-e slot = 75w 6-pin= 75w and 8-pin=150w so if your card has just a 8-pin all it can draw should be 225w

likw from here

''Furmark power draw is even higher with up to 225 W, which is right at the PCIe power limit of the card's 8-pin plus slot-power capability. This doesn't concern me at all and...

Ok, its just odd that a new power supply is shutting off when im supposedly in the clear. I dont have a way to measure power as in a voltage meter, so that was the next best thing. Do you think a 550W PSU would be sufficient or should i go for a 6 or 700?

''Furmark power draw is even higher with up to 225 W, which is right at the PCIe power limit of the card's 8-pin plus slot-power capability. This doesn't concern me at all and is actually a good thing because it provides power headroom, which ensures the card doesn't throttle. Typical gaming power draw is 200 W, and that's the number you should be looking at.

''Furmark maximum power caps out at 166 W, which is higher than the board's power input configuration (150 W). Normal gaming is higher than that limit, too. While nearly all motherboards and power supplies should be able to handle that, it still exceeds specifications, especially if you crank the power limit up while overclocking. Two 6-pin or one 8-pin would have maybe been the better power configuration.

then i'll add 550w psu should be 45 amps at the 12v+

300w card is 25 amps 300 watt / 12v = amps 25

that's 1/2 your psu just for that card at 300w draw [I bet it gets a bit warm ?? ] then add the rest of your system max power draw to that for a grand total amp draw on yiour psu
