Hello.

I have a pre built Dell 8700 series desktop - https://www.cnet.com/products/dell-xps-8700-core-i7-4770-3-4-ghz-16-gb-2-tb/specs/

However, the motherboard has cracked and i need a new one.

I was thinking this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-H97M-D3H-LGA1150-Motherboard-USB3-0/dp/B00K872FB2/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1480679609&sr=8-2-fkmr0&keywords=Gigabyte+GA-Z87MX-D3H+Micro+ATX+LGA1150+Motherboard

Due to my limited knowledge I think it will work but I'm just double checking with you guys. Are the dimensions okay? And is everything else is okay? The chipset and socket type etc...

Thanks in advance.

Your CPU uses Z87/Z97 boards. Z97 supports the 4th and 5th Generation chips whereas Z87 supports only 4th Generation (can support 5th with bios update).
Basically Z97 is backwards compatible with your CPU as they are both socket 1150 :)

From the specs i've seen for your PC and the motherboard i would say yes everything will be compatible. Just bare in mind that if you don't have the Windows activation key to hand you will have to buy a fresh copy of Windows as it is tied to the motherboard upon activation.

So it doesn't matter if they have different chipsets?

This is the broken motherboard btw - http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/dell-0kwvt8-mainboard-specifications/
