Last week I moved back in with my parents and today I decided to set up my pc again.
I brought the Ethernet cable from my old house (which seemed to work fine there) with me.
but now my pc is saying it doesn't have an ethernet cable plugged in.
I'm posting this from my laptop.

additional questions/information:
does the specific side of the cable going into the pc and router make a difference?
as mentioned in first line: I moved back in with my parents, could my change of residence influence this?
because of the speed of my PCs bootup, and the lack of feed from my screen, I am unable to access the BIOS or whatever.
the adapter has the latest driver installed.
the light on the router that is supposed to flash in case of activity is dark.

Solution
Could be I've not seen many mid cable breaks I've encountered more issues with the plugs. Best to just buy a new cable they aren't that much.

Just know what you want the 1st time I went to Frys I asked a sales rep there where their Cat 5 cable was and I was told they didn't sell cat food. Sad thing was he was serious I asked 2 more "salesmen" before I found a manager that knew what Cat5 cable was. True story!

What OS version is the problem PC?

It does not matter which direction you orient the cable.

You should not need to enter your bios, but to do so you would need to reset the bios to turn off the rapid boot function and the reset everything (just for future reference).

Can you try other ports on your family router, ports do fail. You should have a light indicating function, try briefly swapping to a port that they are successfully using to see if the cable is recognized. And is there any indication that the cable was damaged in moving?

I will assume that you have your computer set to automatically obtain an IP address and not set to a static address.

Also, you can try opening an elevated command prompt window (right click run as admin) on the problem computer and type ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
then just type ipconfig and see what output you get.

my PC is using Windows 10

how do I reset the bios?

I have tried other ports, but the old port with a different cable in it will work, while the new port my cable is using goes dark.

I think I do have it set to auto obtain IP, but I'm not sure

When I type ipconfig /release I get: "No operation can be performed on Ethernet while it has its media disconnected"
when I type ipconfig /renew it repeats the same.
and when I finish with just ipconfig is shows:
Ethernet Adapter Ethernet:
media state ............................: media disconnected
connection-specific DNS suffix .:

I tried everything, from countless different forums, and you're right, everything points towards the Ethernet cable being broken.
I tried plugging it into my laptop and it didnt recognize a cable being plugged in either.

Maybe its because this cable was wedged underneath the threshold of my room, the 2 point where it went under and came back up from underneath the threshold were a bit crushed.. it seemed to work fine before I packed up my PC, but maybe being removed and thrown about in the van was what finally killed it.

I'll ask my parents wether they have any spares long enough to reach when they come home.
thanks anyway

More likely a broken wire mid-cable as he had it tucked under a doorway threshold and there are crush marks at the edges where the threshold hit the wire.

It's actually pretty common in my experience when cable is not run through walls, as it takes a lot of abuse compared to the connectors.

Fry's was great many years ago when I lived near one but now I am out in the sticks and just make my own cables.

I'm not going to comment on the nutritional value of CAT5, since I just found out last night that my 6 year old sheepdog's teeth chatter when she's waiting in excitement for a treat. And I really mean chatter.

LOL!! When I've run cable I try to route it so it doesn't take any abuse. I used to have to drive an hour plus to get to a Frys but they opened one 5 mins from my house now. It takes longer to wait in line to pay to get out than to get there now, lol. It pays to have a handicapped person with you to get out faster.

For the computer dept it's a waste of time asking them anything other than where the stuff you want is. I've been working with PCs since before the IBM PCs came out and I have a hard time keeping a straight face hearing some of the BS I hear them tell customers. Of course Best Buy is no better. I've learned to keep my comments quiet or you end up with a bunch a people asking you for advice and help, lol.
