Most motherboards have integrated sound, and a driver to go with it.
For me, my motherboard has Realtek audio, so it has a driver with a nice control panel which does indeed do what you are asking about - tweaking for speaker setups and different modes.
The motherboard matters so far as to what audio solution is on it. It will be useful to know what you have, as you can then find drivers for it.
I believe googling 'pc audio control panel' brings up a lot of soundblaster pages, and might not be of use to you.
