Hey guys,

Could you help me out deciding which I should focus on upgrading? Im looking to build a new PC and at first I thought about getting the i7-6850k instead of the 6700k. However Im also stuck between whether I should upgrade an SSD from the samsung 850pro to a m.2 950pro which has insane write and read speeds. I am mainly doing coding and video editing on 1080p which involves exporting projects and rendering them, hence would it be better if I got a faster SSD over CPU or would the performance of having an extra 2 sets of cores and more cache be most suitable?

Sorry if its a bit cobfusing and thanks in advance.

Solution
Depends on the programs you use, although both can be really beneficial.

Might be worth waiting for AMD's new Zen line-up which arrives in Q1 2017, rumors say they'll offer pretty fast 6+ cores/threaded CPU's for a great price.

If you wait until then and the rumors live up to their expectations, you might just be able to upgrade both the CPU + SSD at the same time.

There is a lot of stuff coming out in next few weeks that could change your prices a great deal. On the 13th for example the 960 evo comes out with faster read write speeds for less and the 960 pro that is just way faster. On the CPU side Zen and kabylake is coming out next month. If Zen is fast enough you could see lower prices on the 6 core Intel. For work I suggest the more cores but I wouldn't suggest the 6850K. I would either go with the 6 core 6800k or the 6900k 8 core.

I agree. I am ready to upgrade myself (i7 3930k @4.2ghz) and i am waiting for Zen to launch. My last 3 builds have been intel, which kills me for the record. I prefer AMD but as a gamer and someone who does a lot of video encode/decode I could no longer justify the lower performing AMD parts even if they were much cheaper. My hope is Zen will bring AMD back to the HEDT and if the rumors are true it will for a fraction of the cost. For me the SR7 unlocked 8 core part that can compete with intel's i7 5960x and i7 6900 for half the price sounds two good to not at least wait for the reviews to come out. If Zen is a fail sadly intel will get my business again.
