My Gateway FX6801-01 specs state that the max memory is 12GB (6 slots) but Crucial website states 24GB max memory. I also was in a chat with a memory "expert" and they stated 24GB as well (asked what my processor was and I told him I7-950). Should I just throw in 24GB and see what happens?

Chances are, at the time the computer specs were designed, DDR3 chips were 2GB in size max per slot and the RAM density has doubled since then. I've only heard of a few odd cases where there ended up being a motherboard compatibility issue with higher density RAM; and those were with older computers.
With windows 10 64-bit home, max RAM is 128gb
64-bit professional, max RAM is 512gb

Thanks bloodroses. I guess I just want reassurances that I wont mess something up. I will give it a try with 24GB (6 slot with 4GB) and see if the system accepts it. I can run Speccy and see if it shows a total of 24Gb physical memory.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS and give it a try, Gateway has never been good on updating their specs (or much of anything else)
