Purchased a 6700k and an MSI titanium m board on black Friday. Asked a question about getting fast ram (3866?) In the memory forum and started to get some information saying the processor had a larger factor in the speed of ram I could handle than the board. Hoping to get more detail here. I'd like to get ram and preorder a 960 evo soon. Looking at 16x2 if that affects the answer.

Thanks for any information.

axlrose,

The i7 6700K officially supports up to DDR4 2133. Anything faster forces the on-die memory controller to overclock so as to match the clock speed of the memory modules, which in turn increases the Core temperatures by several degrees. Enabling XMP also contributes to increasing Core temperatures.

Here's the link to the i7 6700K on Intel's Product Information website: http://ark.intel.com/products/88195/Intel-Core-i7-6700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_20-GHz

Are you overclocking to run 3466? My understanding from another post was that my cpu might not even allow me to run 3866 without a massive overclock and this was news to me. It's been so long since I was able to make a scratch build, that when I last did, I just installed the ram and it ran at rated speeds. This was before xmp etc. too.

Thanks.

Does running 3466 require me to manually overclock at all? I'm willing to teach myself this, but I've never overclocked before. Hornedfrog, have you run into any issues at 3466?

Thanks guys. Great help as always.

No, I just chose the XMP profile in the BIOS and this worked very well.

Just about the pull the trigger and now I'm worried again. Hornedfrog, how much memory are you running? I think the board can take 64gb, so I was going to get 16x2 now and leave room for 16x2 more if I need it in the future. Now I'm noticing on their compatibility lists, there aren't that many 16x2 sets offered and those that are are slower.

Thanks.

what do u mean how tied?
u mean by matching the model?
id say EXACTLY
because each number/code on the stick represents something. there are websites that has a break down if u want to see.
generally on moderate overclocking, you'll only need to adjust less than 5 things in bios.
but if u do overclocking outside the box then ill have to say ram settings can make or break the config.
