I'm looking for a new PC, so I went to part picker. One of their suggestions for my budget comes with a 2x4Gb DDR4 2400, however, in my current rig, I have 2x8Gb DDR3 1866. The motherboard on the suggestion has 4 RAM slots, so. What kind of problems, if any, would arise from having two sets of RAM installed, at different sizes, speeds, and brands?

Tradesman that was a rather generic answer without reading the content of the question.

Clerrissii: the board you selected H170A PC Mate runs DDR4 memory, looking at the user manual specification I see nothing saying it will be able to use DDR3 memory chips and I have high doubts it will in fact play at all with that old ram. Manual at https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1100101/Msi-H170a-Pc-Mate.html, specifications at https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1100101/Msi-H170a-Pc-Mate.html?page=15#manual
