Hello all,

I'm considering the MSI Z170A XPower Gaming Titanium (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z170A-XPOWER-GAMING-TITANIUM-EDITION.html#hero-overview) for my new build. This board offers two M.2 x4 slots that can be combined in a RAID, which I'd like to use. Also, my build will contain a (for now) single Geforce GTX 1080, probably a Gainward GeForce GTX 1080 Phoenix GLH. The placement of the M.2 slots and the sheer size of the GPU now raise the following questions:

  • ■ Will I loose the first M.2 slot when installing this GPU? Judging from board overview pictures the GPU will use up all space occupied by said slot.
    ■ If I don't use the slot: will heat dissipation be a problem for the SSD? It will be located directly below the GPU after all.
    ■ Should I one day decide to install a second GPU - will this result in lane conflict with the existing SSD RAID? I'm only aware of the downgrade from 16x 0x to 8x 8x on the PCIe 16x slots when using two GPUs, which is fine.
    ■ Lastly: is it possible to use NVMe drives for the RAID? I plan to house my OS on the RAID, so obviously I should be able to boot from it.

Am I missing something here? Please add your thoughts - thanks for any insights you might be willing to share!
