Hi Guys
I have MSI 970 gaming mobo and FX8320 cpu. I have installed 2x8Gb Gskill 1866mhz 1.5v modules. When I set the timings etc to those on the ram modules, the BIOS sees them fine at 1866mhz but windows wont get past the W10 welcome screen. I get a blue screen saying that pc ran into a problem and needs to restart. I was told to raise CPU NB voltage, is that true?

If I reset the BIOS setting to default (auto) the ram runs at 1333mhz and windows doesn't crash.

Any help is much appreciated. PS I'm no techy I was just told that I'm not getting the most from my system and to sort it out!

Yes bump your NB the smallest amount then test. Your memory at the higher setting may be a bit unstable and raising the voltage a bit is how to get it stable as you raise the clock speed. If its not enough bump again by a small bit. I have my old thuban at 2.265 NB which you shouldn't go over by much. If it doesn't get stable then try setting your memory to 1600.

Thanks elbert I will give it a go. I tried setting it at 1.5v 1866mhz with correct timings and got the crash. I then tried it again raising DRAM voltage to 1.51v then 1.52v, 1.54v was the last one i tried and got worried that I'm messing with something I don't understand. If my ram is rated at 1.5v how far should I push it before trying the CPU NB voltage increase? Or is increasing the CPU NB voltage the first thing to do in this case?

Actually I've just read that over volting a ram module past it's recommended is not how to do it. Hope I haven't been an idiot.

Na the ram voltage is worth a go but if 1.55 didn't help its probably the NB not stable getting access to the RAM. Just know on the NB 1.3 volts is getting pretty high.

Thanks for your help again.

I tried 1.55v 1866mhz 10-11-10-30 with the CPU NB voltage set to auto and got the crash so I tried bumping the CPU NB voltage in tiny increments until it was 1.284 V and it still crashed at desktop. I was scared to go any further due to a lack of real knowledge so, I decided to set the DRAM voltage back to 1.5v and the CPU NB voltage to auto and tried 1600mhz.
So far it is stable and haven't had a crash in 10 minutes.

It's a little frustrating but at least got somewhere with it. I have read that the MSI 970 mobo does come with some issues heat wise so maybe it's just on it's way out.

Would you suggest I just leave things as they are or continue to try and get things running to spec?

Why I didn't check that I don't know. Solution right there. Now at 1866Mhz and achieved an OC on the CPU at stock voltage of 4Ghz. System runs perfectly and getting 48 degrees under load using prime 95.

Thank you elbert. You are a star.
