Hi guys , I just bought a cheap PC with a decent graphics card , however I would love to upgrade the CPU. It currently has an AMD Phenom II x6 1055T which is 6 cores and only runs at 2.8 GHz.
I would love to upgrade to an AM Athlon x4 860k and according to this site :

http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/specs-dell-0ff3fn/

My Motherboard is compatible with Athlon II X4, Athlon II X3 and Athlon II X2 processors. I just want to confirm , is this upgrade possible ?

thanks.

Solution

According to the link, it can accept any PhII X4. The fastest ones made were the Ph II X4 965, 970, 975, 980. Black Editions. All obsolete and still found occasionally on someplace like ebay. The 6 core you have now has more cores, but the quad cores are clocked higher. Probably better for gaming.

The 860K uses the FM2+ socket. The motherboard you have now does not. It has an AM3 socket. So no, it won't fit. The CPUs listed in your link are the only ones guaranteed to work w/o a BIOS update. And you might not find a BIOS update from Dell anymore.

More and more games are utilizing more cores. In my opinion, there aren't an upgrades worth your time, and even a faster x4 would be a regression in AAA titles like Battlefield. You're pretty much at the end of what AM3 has to offer.
