Currently I have the msi z97 pc mate. When I got it I was on a tight budget and I pretty much just wanted a working motherboard. My main complaints are purely the esthetics, because I found out it has a brownish tone, while the images showed it as black. I have some money to spare now and I was wondering if upgrading the motherboard to something better would be worth the hassle of reassembling the computer. (looking into getting the msi gaming 5). I also wanted to know if switching out the motherboard would require me to mess with the software installed on the computer: Things like reinstalling windows 10, maybe even reactivating it. I don't have a product key for it since I upgraded from windows 7.

Is it worth upgrading my motherboard if I'm not going to switch cpu's ?

Your Windows 7 Product Key was transferred to your Windows 10 product key.
As for upgrading, I'd say it's not worth the effort. If you're currently running the Anniversary Edition of Windows 10 and have the license tied to your Microsoft account, then upgrading the motherboard should not cause any issues in reactivating Windows. Otherwise, a new Windows license may be required.
Software-wise, Windows 10 is better at dealing with new hardware without a complete reinstall, but I'd be ready for a reinstall in case something does not transfer over correctly.
