If you have a tri-band router with a dual band WiFi card in your desktop, can is only connect to 2 networks such as 2.4GHz and 5GHz not both 5GHz networks.

I'm kinda bad at internet stuff.

The "third band" is just two frequencies in the 5Ghz band. (I don't have a tri-band router since I believe they are all hype and no benefit right now) But, I think that if you give "both" of the 5Ghz radios, the same SSID, the router will try to balance devices between the two frequencies. I believe you can also use the second 5Ghz radio as a link to a WIFI access point without interfering with "normal" 5Ghz connectivity.
