I own a WD Passport 0748 500GB that I mostly use for backups and storage for large files. When my computer went into overload by not closing any files, I decided to restart my computer, which proved to take forever. I had no choice but to hard restart by holding the power button. When I finally restart my computer, I find that my HD can't be accessed. I've tried numerous file recovery software, but nothing has been detected. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Miraculously, my hard drive started working again. I left it overnight and used it the next day. Everything seems to be in good condition. It's really bizarre, but it still works.

Welcome to the community, @a_light_switch!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your issues with the WD My Passport drive! :( Unfortunately, the hard restart could have most probably damaged the external if it was still reading/writing data. The 'Fatal device hardware error' is pretty concerning as it could indicate that the issue is physical. This is something that cannot be fixed. Since the files on the WD My Passport are so important to you, I'd strongly advise you to consider contacting a professional data recovery company as they would be your best bet on getting any of the files back. Using third-party utilities at your own risk in the presence of hardware failure is highly dangerous and could potentially cause more harm...

However, I'd still recommend attempting to access the files from another computer using a different USB cable! I'd also ask you to share some screenshots from your Disk Management in Windows while the WD My Passport is connected. It might also be a good idea to check the warranty status of the drive on our website and see if it's still covered.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting! Hope this helps.
