Hello,
I have a fairly aged PC Build dated back from 2012 after my 1st deployment, the PC has served me well but it's slowly starting to show age. The only changes I've made were of course upgrading the OS, HHD to SSD and graphics card ( 670 to 970) from earlier this year. Funds isn't too much an issue but would wish to know what parts would be enough to hold me for another few years. I have mostly just basic knowledge in terms of PC hardware.

From 2012:
CPU - Intel Core i7 3820 @ 3.60GHz
RAM - 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 686MHz (bug from speccy)
MB - ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. P9X79 (LGA2011)
Storage - 931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-9YN162 (SATA) (Using SSD as OS atm)
OD - HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW UH12LS29
Audio - Sound Blaster Z

Any advice would be appreciated.

Since X79 and Sandy Bridge-E came out the chipset as well as the processor platform had seen a drastic change. You now have the X99 platform that operates on DDR4 and the processor to go for is either an i7-6800K or the i7-5820k. In short the motherboard, processor and ram upgrade aren't going to be cheap and you will also need to factor in the form factor, i.e, you may need a case change.

You forgot to include your PSU's make and model, the SSD, the graphics card as well as the OS. Please include them. On a relevant note, what sort of workloads are you planning to drop on your system after an upgrade?

* Might want to go through this thread and followup with the necessary details.
