FX 4130 Overclocking unstable FPS

I have an old system which I am upgrading bit by bit, and in an attempt to squeeze more juice out of my FX-4130 CPU I am using the AMD catalyst overclock feature, but my FPS in games like CSGO become very unstable and suffer lower average and much lower minimum FPS than without overclocking. Any advice?

EDIT: I am overclocking from 3.8 to 4.0 GHz

The 6300 is the max I'd use on that board.
You can run an 8 core 8300 but you'll be stuck at stock clocks which won't benefit in games.
I've had my 6300 at 4.6ghz with the right cooler for the job (Raijintek Pallas) & run at 4.3ghz 24/7 now.

Overclocking with catalyst will never give proper results, it needs to be done in bios.

Overclocking by nature reduces the stability of a CPU. As your CPU gets older, you notice you get less stable boost from your overclock than when it was new, I've had several CPUs and noticed this trend severely.

It may not be a stable overclock - the voltage and/or temperature may be prohibiting proper operation. Have you checked temperatures/modified voltage at all? Are you using the standard heatsink/fan cooler?

Could you suggest an upgrade path? I would rather stick with AM3+ at least until I get a new PC, as I don't want to buy a new motherboard. From my research the best options are FX 6300 or 8300. Which would you say for the money would give more improvement?

My cooler is stock, and I can't find a way to control it unfortunately. As far as voltage/temps, I think you may be on to something. I have decided upgrading would be a better idea though.
