Why my 5 year old desktop pc cannot connect to internet without the cable, while my 9 years old laptop can do it over wi-fi ? Why do I need an wireless adapter for desktop pc ?

Solution

The vast majority of desktop PS's, then and now, do not come with any WiFi capability.
Why? Because they don't move around. Just run an ethernet cable to the router. Far faster and more secure.

If you really need WiFi in a desktop, then add in a USB or PCI-E WiFi adapter.
Personally, I would not pay the extra to have WiFi capability in a desktop, because I don't need it.
Whereas in my laptops, I do need it.
