Hi guys.

As of current I'm using a Coolermaster CM690III. The problem I realized is that the screw less system for 5.25" bay was not designed to short bay devices like lamptron fan controller. It requires full length bay devices for the tab to function.

So, I'm thinking of getting a small strong magnet to block the rear of the screw less tab so that the front one can protrude and hold the fan controller. Btw, another two bays below have been occupied with an Orico 6203ss hardisk enclosure. It was made from either aluminum or steel plus a bit of plastics.

My question, how far does such magnet will damage the electronics in my computer? Is is safe to put a magnet there in the first place? will it damage the hardisk housed below? Thank you in advance.

Solution
Magnets won't damage electronics unless you move them fast enough to induce excessive voltage/current into traces or strong enough to cause transformers/inductors to saturate. What you can damage with strong magnets is data on the HDD's platters and the HDD's body itself is usually made of steel to mitigate the influence of external magnetic forces. You need to put a fairly strong magnet very close to the HDD to have any effect. Exactly how close depends on how strong the magnet is. For the strongest neodymium magnets, you might not want to put it within 10 meters from your PC.

I guess magnets are a no-no. Not to say that I want the strongest magnets though, just enough to make the tab locks the fan controller.

Another option apart from buying an NZXT sentry mix 2 which have full length size, is to screw the fan controller. While it is no problem when screwing on the right because the screw hole is the exact screw size, the left side where the screwless tabs are have an oval-ish shape thus when I attempt to screw it, there's a significant play. I wonder if using screws and tightening it with nuts would solve the problem.

I am all ears for any solution to this issue.
