I've recently been looking into building a home server for my family, not only to back up and store data, but also to run game servers off of, ie. Minecraft. But as I am new to how servers work I would like some advice on what components I should use and why I should choose them to get a better understanding of what I'm working with. I don't want to spend more than around $500-$600 but also want something that will hold up. If possible, include which software I should use(Windows preferably). Thanks!

Solution
You can find used Dell Precisions for cheap on Ebay. I found one with 24gb RAM for a little more than $200. Not sure how much storage you need, but with the extra $300 you can buy some HDD's and maybe a CPU upgrade, depending on the CPU(s) it has (you'd have to ask the seller because he forgot to put it on the listing)

EDIT: With the pictures I found out what his system has. He's selling it for SO much less than it's worth.

OK... Purpose, purpose, purpose....

I run a couple of FreeNAS servers in my home... as backup and as a Plex server.

It's been a while since I looked into the Minecraft server... looks doable:

Other way is with Linux (also free) there are a bunch of flavors of Linux, you do not NEED a true "server" install here, I've used the CENTOS Desktop as well as the CENTOS 7 "Server with GUI"

Ubuntu is a little easier, if you are a MAC person. All Linux need you to tweak them to get your purpose from them...

You could just do a Windows 10 Pro on a decent system, this will eat out $150 ish from the budget.

For my FreeNAS systems, they are both AMD A10 APU's running 16GB RAM. The OS runs from a Flash drive and all your storage drives are open for media. I think my systems came in under $500, minus the cases and PSU's, which I had as repurposes.

Thanks for the links, and Though I am looking for a cheap solution, I am more looking to build/set one up for the experience. But I will keep that in mind :)
