Hi everyone,

I've had the FX-8150 for a long time now and it's met most of my needs. Recently I got an RX480 and I've noticed that my cpu is starting to bottleneck my system.

I have the chance to get the i7-6700K for around 200CAD at the moment and I was wondering if it would be worth the upgrade (the cpu as well as a new motherboard of course).

Any thoughts on whether it's worth it? And if it is, what's a good motherboard to go for?

Yes in my opinion it would be worth an upgrade the 6700k has more PCI lanes open so that would be great for you if you end up x-firing your 480. Your getting more power from each individual core with the skylake upgrade as well. If I stop trying to be nice there is no comparison between those 2...

If I stop trying to be nice there is no comparison between those 2 cpu's the 8150 is a piece of garbage next to an i7-6700k.
You will notice a great increase all across the board switching.

I love ASUS mobo's never had one fail on me and never had an issue installing or updating the BIOS. Here's a link to a solid ASUS board

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Z170-A-ATX-DDR4-Motherboards/dp/B012NH05UW%3Fpsc%3D1%26SubscriptionId%3DAKIAI3VLI6HITR26KCBQ%26tag%3Duserbenchmark-20%26linkCode%3Dsp1%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB012NH05UW

Its got USB 3.1 support, as well as M.2 and SATA Express support. the M.2 SSD's are even faster than the SATA versions. So it has you covered for the forseable future. I am using the PRO version of this board myself.

I do have 2 things I would like to throw out there as well. #1 Are you using a traditional HDD and not an SSD? Upgrading your disc could also help smooth out performance issues this is a cheaper option and if you get a Samsung EVO or PRO SSD you will wonder why you never switched sooner. If you are running an SSD ignore that question.
The other thing I would like to point out is in a month or 2 AMD is going to be releasing their new ZEN processors there has been good things said about these new chips so 20 minutes of researching the ZEN line and if you think its better to wait and get one of them or you still feel the i7-skylake is the better option.
Im an Intel Nvidia guy myself but I honestly do more reading on AMD products. I dont hate AMD in fact I try to keep up with them bc Im begging them to give me a reason to root for them. In my most honest opinion I would have already flushed my 8150 and got my skylake but I wanted to be fair to you and to some other options that would or could be beneficial to you. Especially if you're a big AMD fan. Wait I lied I wouldn't flush the 8150 I would save it and the motherboard and if I knew someone or thought you might run into someone someday you could offer them your old CPU/mobo. Ive given away 3 of my old rigs and neither got nor asked for anything in return bc being able to share my hobby with someone else is my reward. I gave my i7-4770k gaming rig away to a guy I knew who's son loved PC's and gaming but at this moment in time he could not afford to buy him something so I mentioned it and told him he could take it home with him and give it to his son as a suprise. I love to spread my hobby and help people who have the passion but not the means to get into it. Again thats my personal opinion.
You could put it up on EBay and get some extra capital to help out your own wants or needs with your own rig. Anyways kinda long and I feel like I got a tiny bit off-track or too deep lmao. But if anything I hope I gave you something to think about and get the ball rollin' for you. Have a good one and cheers

Thanks for all your help! I'll definitely keep my old cpu and mobo around just in case anything were to happen! Also, I'll see if that motherboard goes on sale, I was actually eyeing it as well. It seems to be one of the most popular mobo's of the socket I'm looking for.

I'm still using a hard drive but I might look to replace that and change it to an ssd winter as well so something to look into. In terms of Zen, I was originally going to wait, but at the price point I'm getting the i7-6700k for, I honestly can't justify going for Zen.

I just looked at what 200 CAD is in US Dollars. You're spot on finding an i7-6700k for 150 US is a ridiculous deal, if I looked it up earlier I would have told you to stop reading and buy that thing NOW. The mobo I linked and at its price if you added the skylake price you are getting both for the same price I bought my i7-6700k for with no mobo.
Regarding a SSD I still recommend it, of course keep your HDD for straight up storage for your local media, but getting one for your OS and a couple of your favorite games will utilize the new cpu a lot better.
I forgot that you are using ddr3 memory not ddr4. If I am not mistaken if you are not using low voltage ddr3(1.2v) you need to go ddr4. If you use 1.5v ddr3 memory it will damage your cpu. Here's another link to some DDR4 memory I recoommend.

Anything over 2133MHz you won't benefit from or the performance is going to be negligable.
Here's a 16GB set as well.

I linked an 8GB and a 16GB set since this is an expense you might not have been aware of and I do not know your budget. Last but not least here's a cheaper mobo not much but usually when I hit my budget all I need is another 20 bucks so the money saved might be just enough.

I apologize I messed up I was looking at the wrong thing, I have like 20 tabs always open on my 2nd screen and I made a mistake.

Between the 480 and 1060 they are so close in comparison its really a coin flip. I personally enjoy Nvidia's Control Panel and suite over AMD's. But in this situation I would go with the 480 over the 1060. To me anything under a 1070 sway's AMD's way I really like the 480 and I am going to buy 1 or 2 for my little side-project. I think it has a lot of present and future potential over the 1060.

So the 480 is what I'd get.

Then I would be saving to replace that..... CPU with what Chugalug suggested a nice shiny i5-6600k which means new mobo, and memory also. So now Im just suggesting this after I bought my 480 I'd save for an SSD either 256 GB or 500 GB and put Windows and maybe a couple games on it. That would help with performance until you could afford (basically an upgrade) then just move your SSD to the i5-6600k build.

Hey sorry for the really late reply. To put it bluntly, yes. Yes the cpu did bottleneck my rx480 really hard.
After the upgrade to my new processor, it's been a ton better!
