Hello,

So, from what I've read, the GTX 1080 should be getting minimum 90fps on 1440p resolution.

I am running 1080p (before you criticise, I know is overkill to have a gtx 1080 for 1080p) and am getting AVERAGE 45 fps on high and ultra settings.

My rig is:
Watercooled (Corsair H55 I believe) Intel Core i5 6600k @4.0 GHz
Gigabyte GeForce® GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming WATERFORCE 8G
2x 8GB Ripjaw X RAM modules
EVGA SuperNova 750 G2 Power Supply
512GB Sandisk Pro SSD
2TB HDD
Windows 10 64bit
ASRock Z170 Pro4 D3 MOBO

In general, my 1080 has been a lot lower than expectations in all games but yeah, any help would be greatly appreciated.

My CPU usage in every gme has been near 100 and I am not sure why because the i5 6600k was supposed to be quite a powerful cpu.

Thankyou in advance

are you monitoring cpu temps while you play?

Have you tried reseating your GPU? I had some issues with my 970 and that seemed to have fixed it.

Do you have any background processes open that is limiting the CPU usage?

Have you tried overclocking your CPU to get an extra boost out of it?

I don't think there are any programs limiting CPU usage after checking task manager.

I have OC'ed my CPU to 4 GHz from 3.5GHz.

I will try reseating my GPU.

I am hoping that it is to do with the seating of the GPU, you could always try to RMA the GPU afterwards if it doesn't work, but it is a very costly and long process.

Do you have another PC you can use this in? If so can you do so.

I tried reseating the GPU, no fix.

Right, how long has this issue been going on?

Was it after a driver update, or has it been all the time?

Are your drivers fully up-to-date as there may be issues brought with the old drivers.

Is it possibly to do with my monitor. One of my mates said its frame skipping (AOC G2460PF 144Hz Monitor) because it is apparently a rip off 144hz monitor.

I highly doubt it's to do with your monitor, it won't cause low FPS, if anything it will try and force up to 144Hz, and obviously screen tearing anything below it, this will not cause low FPS just various skipping.

This issue has been like this since the day I intsalled the card. It just hasn't been performing as expected. I would've thought it could run above 100 on max settings in most games. My drivers are up to date but am reinstalling them at the moment.

Reinstallation is a good choice.

How long have you had this card? It will still be in warranty, so you could try to get the shop you bought it from to test it, and if they do not do that, then replace it and see if that happens. #

Did you build this from scratch or did you upgrade it piece by piece? If so, did you uninstall your old GPU drivers, that may cause a clash but I highly doubt it.

I only got it earlier this year. I have been progressively upgrading all of my parts. I did uninstall my previous drivers before installing my new ones. Is there anything else I can do so that I don't have to replace it. I have had issues with the store that I bought it from with other components, is there a way of replacing it directly with Nvidia?

Its nothing to do with Nvidia directly, its more towards Gigabyte,

Try creating an account on their website, and registering your GPU then fill out an RMA form and then you will get a replacement directly from Gigabyte, instead of that store.

Right, that would've helped quite a lot.

As you've tried basically everything and performance is still low, it may be an issue with your GPU in which case an RMA or replacement will be best advised, as already said.

Do you have another GPU to test to see that it is not your motherboard? I highly doubt it is.

The 6600k has a turbo speed of 3.9Ghz so your overclock to 4.0 is negligible. Try going up to 4.4-4.6.

Now the not nice bit. People throw around an i5 is all you need and an i7 brings little gain. This is not 100% true. In high fps situations where a game is CPU intensive and can use multiple threads an i7 brings significant gains to the minimum and average fps. Max fps is normally unchanged. Personally if I were building a 1080p 144Hz gaming build I wouldn't use an i5.

I5's can easily get 144Hz, it really doesn't affect FPS at all, just resolutions and things.

i7's bring little gain in games where extra threads aren't needed, and in most cases that is the truth.

His i5-6600K will most likely bottleneck the GTX 1080 slightly, but that shouldn't cause the low FPS he is having, he should easily be able to reach the 144Hz target.

This issue has to come down to the GPU being faulty of some sort, because it is not really anything to do with settings such as VSync and other CPU intensive settings.

I can back this up by saying, his build is better than mine, which is true, and I play on higher FPS than him.

And this has only come around from upgrading to the 1080, in which case that is more than likely the issue, not his CPU.

Although there may be a lot of background processes dragging back the CPU, but even so.

IF you believe it is the CPU, the i7 would bring little to no performance gain at all.

What is your CPU usage while idle? Forgot to ask this.

Edit: Basically no matter what, the CPU with a larger overclock will increase FPS, but only slightly, although as his CPU is at 100% and GPU at 60%, this is a 1080 we're looking at, and the CPU will bottleneck it more than likely.

The GPU should still allow him to run over 40FPS on maximum settings, this thing runs 4K on 60FPS with either a 6600K overclocked or a 6700K.

May not be the case, as there can be other things to test beforehand.

Have you tried other games to see what the performance is like.

Adding onto my last post, if it was his CPU causing the huge bottleneck, there's people playing it on 1440p with the 6600K and a 1070, so it isn't the case.

Although it does seem to be the CPU's fault that it is bottlenecking, could you tell me what processes are taking up the most usage while in game?

CPU Usage while idling is perfectly normal.

Where is the game installed, have you tried moving it to your SSD and playing it from there if it is on your HDD?

Could you download CrystalDiskInfo and do a SMART check on your HDD and SSD and see if there's any issues?

Could you run some basic benchmarks on your GPU/CPU such as 3D Mark or Heaven?

Edit: Upgrading to the 6700K would simply be a waste of money :)
