so I was overclocking my gpu, when i was doing heavens benchmark it crashes easily, but when i play a game it was at the same overclock rate, and didn't crash, is that normal

Solution

I agree with Ironsounds. Just wanted to add that it sounds as if you are on the bleeding edge of your overclock. Yes, benchmarking programs push the heck out of your component(s). But ut so too can some games(BF1 anybody?). What happens when you are about to finally complete a level and the card crashes due to the overclock and the insane amount of action happening on screen.

What is the OC returning other than increased heat?

And I just echoed you. Sorry about that. Great minds?:D Maybe back off 25MHz with both your memory and core. Just an assumption...

ok, also i think I'm at the peak of my GPU, like if i go 5 more Mhz it would crash, is that safe, or should i back off more

Hello... Yes it is normal to find a stable and un-stable setting... and then you back off that setting a little at a time... 10 Mhz is typical for me... BUT you need to monitor your temps now too... "You have to let temperature dictate your OC"... in summer time you may have to back off about 100mhz... so keep a eye on your thermals and fan speed and you won't create any hardware problems B )

my max temp is 66 C, min is 44 C, usually stays around 60-64, is that ok?

Beautiful. You could apply a slightly stronger or more aggressive fan curve. Well within norms.

umm what does stronger or more aggressive fan curve mean? sorry I'm a nuuub

Hello... What GPU are you using? and what OC numbers are you using with it?

Typically you do the GPU clock first then you do the memory clock... the memory clock changes will not be as large as it is already quad pumped timing cycles and the cooling/mounting to them will vary between models.

asus strix gtx 1080 A8G version, overclocked to 2101 Mhz and memory is 11420 Mhz

Hello... WOW nice card and heatsink/design...This is a new GPU, so there is not a lot of samples/numbers/articles on it... But there seem to be some new technology here, words and terms... Core clock, boost clock and max boost clock for the GPU B / is that MAX boost setting?

And Typically I'm seeing about <200MHZ above the stock base/boost/Max 1607/1733/1898 ...are you using the GPU Tweak II?

yes I'm using the GPU Tweak II, and on the GPU tweak, it only shows 1934 MHz, but in game it is at exact 2100 MHz
and I'm not using the settings, i created my own settings

 I don't need no stinking roads. I blaze my own!

xD thanks for the help though, also i got prob the dumbest question ever, should i turn my power supply off at night when i turn my pc off? or lets say i just turn off my surge protector which has my pc, monitor, and led strip power connected to it

Hello... Ya I'm really like the heat, low power needs and performance of these new NVidia series 10 models... And you have a well designed heatsink on it... you are in the ball park for your OC test results 200 Mhz increase. GJ B )

Yes I use a power strip for everything and switch it off there ( leave PS switch on)... for extra protection and startup and shut down convenience.

ok, so switch off my surge protector overtime i don't use my computer? which is basically every night

I do the same thing. Expecting some thunderstorms while you sleep? Unplug it as well.
