Hi folks,

I am half way through building a gaming machine which will also server me as a Lab hosting a huge no of VMs. I will also be gaming at 1080p @ Max settings.. looking for 70-80 fps..

here's the rest of the build details

Board: Asus X99 Aii (5 way optimization)
Ram: Gskill Ripjaws 3400 Mhz
PSU: EVGA G2 plus 750 watt
Case: CM Mastercase pro
GPU: Zotac 1070 Amp extreme
HDD: 1 TB Sandisk ultra II SSD

Please help me decide whether the Xeon 2697 V3 will go well with this build - with respect to gaming and VMs.

It will be good for VMs if you put enough RAM with it. 14 cores is going to want 64GB RAM or more. It will be just OK for gaming. It doesn't have a high clock speed. Too many cores means lower clock speed because of the thermal limits. Games, in general, will not use more than 4 cores.

Add additional NIC card(s) if you are going to run a LOT of VMs.

Thanks for your inputs. When you say "Just OK" for gaming... Does it mean I will struggle to achieve 70+ fps in the latest games like Mafia3, GTA V etc? I just want to make sure that I can operate both the environments smoothly. I am confused between 2697V3/5960X/5820K. Just that I am getting a good deal for a used Xeon 2697 V3 (around 350$).
