Okay so i have owned my i5 2500k for a very long time now.(i love this CPU) Now it is time for me to upgrade to an i7. Right now i am stuck between the i7 6700k and the i7 4790k. If i were to get the 4790k i would be spending around 450 for the CPU and Mobo. If i get the 6700k i will be spending almost 700 for the CPU Mobo and ram.(Money isn't the issue here) My real question would be what one should i get? i use my desktop for gaming, i do record videos daily when i play arma 3. I know that the 6700k is slightly better than the 4790k, but is the performance worth the extra i'm going to be spending.

The i7-6700K is newer and gets you into DDR4 RAM so theoretically will have an edge over the i7-4790K and will get you a little more "future proofed".
Money no object I'd go with the newer tech. But then it all depends on which GPU you are going to use them with as that will have more of an impact on performance.

Like said above, the improvements between a 4790k and a 6700k are pretty marginal. The key difference is that the 4790k will consume more power which basically translates to more heat. Therefore, a 6700k should theoretically overclock farther, but personally I just stop at that voltage wall.

The other differences ; likely shortened support in games (but you'll probably be upgraded by then) and DDR4 RAM. However, not having to pay for RAM and just using what you have now isn't bad either, imo.

yeah i'm thinking of going with the 4790k, any motherboard you recommend? i was looking at this

I'm not too knowledgeable on past generation motherboards, but I typically recommend Asus and Gigabyte because they usually have the same features at the price point but are trusted for being durable, consistent, and not arriving DOA of course.

A few here tend to question MSi's qc. I personally think that board should be sufficient by taking a look at it and it's specs.

Why do you want an i7?
What are you going to do on it?

Are you going to encode/video/render? If not the i7 will not help much if anything.

If you can just overclock it if you are having issues.

You probably better off with a GPU upgrade.

I'm Personally using a I7 4790k and a MSI Z97 Gaming 5 (Been using since Around March 2016) with a GTX 1070 (july 2016) and i have yet to run into any issues besides temps with the stock cooler (easily remedied with a Aftermarket cooler like Cryoig H7 or CM 212 Evo)

Judging from the TH review of an early kaby i7, performance will (again) be marginally influenced, especially slow considering that this is a "revision" of the 14 nm process AFTER the "improvement" phase or something like that.
