Over the weekend I installed some upgrades for my GF's gaming PC. I swapped in a new MOBO (MSI Z97 Gaming 5) and added a new SSD (Samsung 850 EVO) and increased the RAM.
Everything went fine during the Windows 7 install. I used a flash drive to insall drivers for a TP-Link wifi adapter. Once I was connected I downloaded Nvidia drivers, chrome, and a Ninite file. When I went to download the drivers for the mobo/chipset/etc. the download speed started normal (~6-10 MB/s) before it abruptly dropped to ~5 kb/s and then dropped to 0 b/s. It did this in both Chrome and IE. I thought it could be the website so I installed everything from the provided driver disk. Then I tried to install the Ninite file. It failed to download Firefox, and when I tried to download flash player it was at 0 b/s as well. I thought it might be the WiFi adapter so I installed the provided drivers for the NIC. Being connected that way didn't change anything either.
I then did some googling and found out that the "Killer" NIC drivers aren't exactly popular. I installed the newest version of the drivers, tried uninstalling the drivers and installing Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 drivers instead (something recommended by several places online), and uninstalling the "Killer" suite/unchecking "Killer management" in adapter settings. Nothing changed.
I then got frustrated and reinstalled Windows again. This time I installed the NIC drivers only, but the issue continued. I then thought it had to be security and made sure there was no A/V or Firewalls running (including windows) and that my Comcast router/modem had minimal security running, but other PC's on the network work fine, so I doubt it's anything outside the PC itself.
I'm reaching the end of my wits with this one, and am thinking it must either be an issue with the Windows installs or the MOBO, but wanted to see if anyone might have any ideas here before I reinstall Windows a third time (from a different disk this time) and RMA the MOBO if that's unsuccessful.
