I dropped my Acer Aspire S3 and it busted the HDD, I have spare HDDs though, so, I was thinking I could just replace it with one of those...

First of all, I'll try to explain exactly what I've done so far.:

Used diskpart to clean the new HDD.
Allocated a new volume and formatted the HDD to NTFS.
Made a Windows 7 installation usb drive (I use this method for installing windows all the time and I can't use a disk because there is no disk drive).
Put the new HDD in the Acer Aspire S3.
Switched on the computer and pressed f12 to boot from device and chose my windows 7 installation usb drive.

I get the message "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I've never replaced a HDD before and I don't have any "boot disks".

Solution
Did the bootable device creation process finish successfully?
I believe you can try the external drive on another system and see if the issue persists. That way, you will make sure if all of this is caused by your system or the installation media.

Yes it detects the new HDD and it detects the usb drive.
I know the problem was the HDD because I've tested it with my HDD enclosure and my PC won't even detect it and it makes horrible noises.

It detects the USB drive, but doesn't boot into it? Have you tried changing the boot order? I know you hit F12, but changing the boot order in the BIOS helps me sometimes. Also, try different USB ports.

Yes, the HDD I put in it is first on the list, I even loaded the default bios and had to enable the f12 boot menu.
Is there definitely nothing I've done wrong in how I said I formatted the new HDD; I really feel that's the problem.

Hi there mallon1990,

The first boot option should be your USB drive, not your HDD. You need to boot from the USB first, not the HDD. This is most probably why, you get no bootable device error message. Your HDD is not yet bootable. It is blank.

So, just adjust your boot order and let us know how this goes,
